An account of the trip written by Sheila Pratt of Boston Group
Ullswater was the setting for a walking break organised by Pat and Colin Budge for the Boston group in June. Colin led challenging walks up on High Street and Striding Edge which tested our nerve and endurance. The first day we caught the Ullswater steamer to Howtown and then walked back to Glenridding. The day was very hot and the views were spectacular. The second day from Hartsop we climbed on to High Street there was a little cloud which kept the temperature cooler. Again we had superb views of Windermere, Grasmere and the Helvellyn range. John Bird led a walk around Brothers Water for those not wanting to climb. The third day really tested our nerve when we climbed Helvellyn. The intrepid ones went along Striding Edge, the mist closed in as they made their way along the precipice. While most of the group were tackling Helvellyn and Striding Edge nine elected to do an easier six mile walk along Grisedale Beck led by Bernard Lawrence. They had a steep climb to Lanty`s Tarn and continued alongside the beck, they could see the high level walkers gradually disappear as they climbed towards the Hole in the Wall and Striding Edge. They stopped for lunch on the side of a tributary stream and took the opportunity to cool their feet in the icy water before their ascent to Keldas viewpoint to admire Ullswater and then downhill back into Glenridding. That night Pat had arranged that we all met up for a meal at the Glenridding Hotel. On the final day there was a short walk to Aria Force. Those who wanted more of a challenge climbed Skiddaw. We were very lucky to have four superb walking days in a most scenic area with good weather
