Brett Collier devised this new route since it had long been his wish to have an alternative to the southern half of the Viking Way which ended in Lincolnshire (Stamford) rather than in Rutland (Oakham).
What does Danelaw mean?
The Danelaw was an agreement which was reached in 886 on the extent of the territory of the Viking invaders - the Danelaw. Lincoln became one and possibly the largest of the Five Boroughs of the East Midlands, together with Stamford, Derby, Nottingham and Leicester. All of them eventually became 'shires' - except Stamford, whose shire was incorporated into Lincolnshire.
The route was planned to be walked in seven daily stages.
1 Lincoln to Aubourn
2 Aubourn to Caythorpe, including all weather alternative
3 Caythorpe to Ropsley
4 Ropsley to Castle Bytham
5 Castle Bytham to Stamford via Ryhall and Belmesthorpe
6 Castle Bytham to Stamford - direct route
7 Ryhall Circular
